REPETITIVE STRAIN INJURY (RSI) AT WORK

Injuries that occur over time such as repetitive strain injury (RSI) as a result of work can be covered by workers’ compensation. If you have suffered a RSI because of your work, it’s important to seek legal advice to assist you with bringing a claim.

The pain of a Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) can present itself in more ways than one. Not only can it cause severe physical discomfort and pain- but it can also lead to loss of work, inability to complete tasks or a cause a disturbance in day-to-day life. When your RSI has occurred through work or place of employment, it may be possible for you to receive workers compensation.

What is Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI)?

RSI is commonly known as a work-related limb disorder, causing pain in the muscles, nerves and tendons. It may also be referred to as Occupational Overuse Syndrome (OOS).

Things thought to increase the risk of RSI are repetitive tasks, high-intensity activities without rest and poor posture. Examples of jobs that could lead to RSI include work on assembly lines, computer work, construction jobs or checkout operators. Of course, repetitive strain injuries can arise in several different occupations.

These injuries are common, with claims from strain and sprain injuries accounting for the largest proportion of statutory claim payments in 2019–20. (Queensland workers’ compensation scheme statistics 2019–20)

What could you claim?

If your claim is successful, you could expect to receive compensation for:

• Medical and rehabilitation expenses; • Loss of income; • Your pain and suffering; and/or • Costs of home or nursing assistance.

There could be more for you to claim given your specific circumstances. As every claim will vary, these categories are not exhaustive and its important to seek advice to ensure you get what you’re entitled to.
